This edition includes a new afterword by the author. Publisher's description: Commissioned in 1625 by the Archduchess Isabel, Governor of the Spanish Netherlands, The Triumph of the Eucharist constitutes Ruben's grandest surviving program of church decoration--some twenty tapestries in all. Scribner's book provides a fully integrated study of this remarkable cycle, concluding with his recent solution to the elusive problem of how Rubens designed them to hang in Madrid's royal convent of the Descalzas Reales. As the epitome of High Baroque religious art, this tapestry series focuses on the central subject of Couter-Reformation theology: the Sacrament. It presents an epic history of the Eucharist, from its Old Testament prefigurations through the historical battles with paganism and, later, Protestantism. Scribner's iconographic study of Ruben's visual epic reveals the richness of his allegorical language and vocabulary of images. In its elaborate--and unprecedented--inclusion of fictive architecture within the tapestries, Rubens effectively transformed the convent chapel into a new Holy of Holies, the Christian successor to the Jewish Tabernacle of the Most High. In his grandest commission as Isabel's court painter, Rubens here offers his High Baroque expression of his Catholic faith.
