EVA HESSE: TRANSFORMATION: THE SOJOURN IN GERMANY 1964/65 | DATEBOOKS 1964/65. Regula Bochsler. Hauser & Wirth, London, 2015. Distributed in the U.S.A. by Ram Publications, Santa Monica. 238 pp. 24 x 20 cm. ISBN 9783883758000 In English.
This title is offered as a special-order item. Publisher's description: The transformational period immediately before and during Eva Hesse's sojourn in Germany -- the country from which she was exiled in 1938 -- is the focus of this handsome boxed two-volume set including catalog and datebook. During that year, Hesse moved away from painting and drawing toward collage and three-dimensional works with a more linear, monochrome minimalism. Elegantly presented, the drawings included in the catalog clearly illustrate the artist's shift to the three-dimensional reliefs that mark the decisive breakthrough toward sculpture in her work. The annotated datebooks contain Hesse's comments on the many travels she made with her husband, sculptor Tom Doyle, visits to exhibitions and encounters with artists, providing glimpses into the artist's personal and artistic transformation as well as insights into the period. With essays on the artist's process by the show's curators Sabine Folie and Georgia Holz, and preface by Kunsthalle Wein director Gerald Matt.
