MATTHIAS HAMANN: YOU WOULD. Spector Books, Leipzig, 2015. Distributed in the U.S.A. by Ram Publications, Santa Monica. 128 pp. 31 x 22 cm. ISBN 9783944669915 In English.
This title is offered as a special-order item. Publisher's description: You Would -- the title of Matthias Hamann's latest photo book taken from graffiti spotted on a garbage bin during his wanderings in New York -- can be taken as a challenge or an invitation. In this informal magazine-like artist book, featuring 100 color images, Hamann employs a diaristic approach to mixing staged portraits of the queer scene with photographs recording his impressions as a flaneur (observer) in New York and Berlin. The book's clear film cover signals the tease of the voyeur -- on one hand it suggests an opening or window inviting us to enter and observe intimate moments, while on the other, it creates a barrier reminding us that we are on the outside of this experience. Matthias Hamann (b. 1974, Leipzig) studied photography under Timm Rautert and Christopher Muller at the Academy of Visual Arts, Leipzig. In 2012 Hammann resided in New York on a Free State of Saxony scholarship.
