LUCIANO RIGOLINI: MASK. Edition Patrick Frey, Zurich, 2015. Distributed in the U.S.A. by Ram Publications, Santa Monica. 330 pp. 20 x 15 cm. ISBN 9783905929812 In English.
This title is offered as a special-order item. Publisher's description: Mask, the new artist book by Swiss photographer Luciano Rigolini presents a series of automobile grilles -- sculptures in their own right -- from American cars built between 1955 and 1962, a period in which engineering technology ushered in unprecedented creative possibilities in automotive design. It is this object quality that interests Rigolini, who for several years now has been collecting images of objects such as urban furniture, emptied of human presence or trace, from sales or industrial catalogs. For Mask, Rigolini scanned images of various automobile fronts and placed each grille in the center of a blank page with only a caption indicating the year of manufacture, brand or model. The singular, decontextualized image produces a distancing but startling effect allowing the viewer to appreciate the raw design elements and unlimited possibilities of a country in the grips of a huge product and design revolution.
