DIE BILDERGALERIE FRIEDRICHS DES GROSSEN: GESCHICHTE, KONTEXT, BEDEUTUNG. Verlag Schnell + Steiner, Regensburg, 2015. 240 pp. ISBN 9783795429584 In English.
This title is offered as a special-order item. Publisher's description: 2013 marked the 250th opening of the Picture Gallery in the Sanssouci Park in Potsdam, an occasion for which an exhibit and a conference newly examined the Frederician gallery. The results of a scholarly colloquium, in which international experts participated, allowed the Picture Gallery to be placed within the context of the period in which it was built and to be analyzed through new interpretive methods. Representations of the Berlin, Dusseldorf, and Dresden galleries, and the Vienna Gallery in Belvedere, provide a comparative context used to highlight clearly the unique qualities of the Potsdam gallery. King Frederick II of Prussia shaped the Picture Gallery in an exceptionally personal way through the architecture of his gallery, through his purchase of paintings, and his commissioned sculptures. New insights into the Picture Gallery of Sanssouci Park in celebration of its 250-year existence emerge from the presentation of the personal influence of Frederick the Great's unique collection set into the context of the period of the gallerys construction.
