This chiefly pictorial volume features a recent series of color images by British photographer Sam Taylor-Johnson (b. 1967), better known by her professional name Sam Taylor-Wood, the works documenting clown faces painted onto eggshells (objects drawn from the Clowns' Gallery and Museum in Wookey Hole, Somerset, and treated by Taylor-Wood as a subject of photographic portraiture) in illustration of a practice developed in the 1940s by the International Circus Clowns Club as a method of recording the unique makeup designs created by its member clowns.
