ART SCHOOL: PAUL WINSTANLEY. Jon Thompson and Maria Fusco. Ridinghouse, London, 2013. Distributed in the U.S.A. by Ram Publications, Santa Monica. 304 pp. with 226 col. ills. 29 x 23 cm. ISBN 9781905464784 In English.
Publisher's description: Paul Winstanley, who works from photographic material, creates hyperrealistic yet haunting paintings of unpopulated architectural spaces in the vein of Hiroshi Sugimoto. Joining an ongoing discussion on the role of arts education, Winstanley documented the undergraduate studio spaces of some 50 art schools across the United Kingdom. These rough-and-ready, nearly neutral spaces were photographed as he found them, abandoned between school years. Collectively, the painting series, which was recently shown at Vera Munro in Hamburg, highlights the abstraction of the interiors with their temporary white walls, paint stains and other details. Amazingly similar -- dull and sterile these spaces are intended to foster intense creativity. More than 200 full-color images are accompanied by a text by Jon Thompson and an interview with the artist and Maria Fusco.
