This large-format volume presents striking black-and-white landscape images produced by French photographer and filmmaker Gaumy (b. 1948) during hikes and climbs in mountainous regions of France and Italy; the subtitle refers to the only two texts featured in the book ("The Tale of the Hollow Men and the Bitter Rose" and "Treatise of Analogical Alpinism"), which are drawn from the celebrated allegorical mountaineering novel Mount Analogue, an unfinished work by French avant-garde writer Rene Daumal (1908-1944) that was published posthumously in 1952.
