This volume examines the 74 known glass plates recording the aftermath of the September, 1862, Battle of Antietam that were produced by Mathew Brady employee Alexander Gardner (1828-1882) and his assistant James Gibson, the works presented alongside recent photographic reenactments of the scenes that establish a credible chronological sequence of the legendary Civil War-era images, the first to depict dead American soldiers.
