Published in conjunction with an exhibition organized in 2003 by the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, Albuquerque, this volume showcases 23 retablo paintings by American painter Carrillo (b. 1956) that depict the patron saints of 19 active and four abandoned pueblos in New Mexico, the works accompanied by historical photographs of the pueblos themselves and illustrations of traditional Pueblo pottery, from which the artist borrowed decorative design elements for inclusion in his paintings.
