This thought-provoking volume evolved from a series of eight retreat-style seminars held in California and elsewhere between 2001 and 2003 under the title "Awake: Art, Buddhism and the Dimensions of Consciousness," an open-ended consortium that brought together figures from diverse disciplines to explore the ways in which contemporary art reflects Buddhist thought, the participants including museum curators, educators, cultural critics, religious leaders and several artists, among them Marina Abramovic, Ann Hamilton, Mariko Mori, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Bill Viola and Zhang Huan.
