This dual biography examines the 50-year relationship between American-born artist, poet and aesthete Dwight Ripley (b. 1908) and his partner, the renowned British botanist Rupert Barneby (1911-2000), exploring their lifelong passion for botany which began in Europe in the 1920s and continued after their emigration to the United States, where they became involved in and helped support the New York avant-garde art scene of the 1950s while part of a luminous social circle that included Peggy Guggenheim, W.H. Auden, Christopher Isherwood and Clement Greenberg.
