Sandy Skoglund. CAMERA- Centro Italiano per la Fotografia, Turin, 2019. Organized in association with Paci Contemporary, Brescia. Published in association with Silvana Editoriale, Cinisello Balsamo. Distributed in the U.S.A. by Artbook|D.A.P., New York. 352 pp. Well illustrated (chiefly col.). 25 x 22 cm. ISBN 9788836642670 In English.
Note: This volume was produced to accompany the first major retrospective exhibition on American artist Skoglund (b. 1946), which was presented at CAMERA--Centro Italiano per la Fotografia in Turin (1/24/19 - 3/24/19) in collaboration with Paci Contemporary in Bescia. Although written by the exhibition's curator Germano Celant, the publication itself does not contain a prominent exhibition reference and is not a catalogue per se; however, various Worldcat records have catalogued it as an exhibition catalogue, despite its ambiguous status. Publisher's description: Jersey City-based photographer and installation artist Sandy Skoglund (born 1946) constructs sets featuring handmade sculptures and human characters, achieving the idea of a total work of art. In this way, her works are at once installations, sculptures, collages and, finally, photographs. Edited by the great Italian curator Germano Celant, this comprehensive monograph, comprised of more than 400 images, compiles Skoglund's photography, a discipline she broached in the 1970s, while in New York, in order to document her work. Ranging from the earliest photographic series of the mid '70s (which already feature the characteristic themes of the domestic setting and its transformation into a place of apparitions between the comical and the unsettling) to previously unpublished photographs that the photographer has recently created. Also included are specimens of the strange creatures that inhabit her photographs, the colorful sculptures of foxes, fish and other animals that play as foils to the otherwise everyday scenes of her tableaux.

SANDY SKOGLUND: REALITY UNDER SIEGE -- A RETROSPECTIVE. Smith College Museum of Art, Northampton, 1998. Published in association with Harry N. Abrams, Inc., New York. 120 pp. with 64 ills. (40 col.). 24 x 25 cm. LC 97-36229 ISBN 0810941856 In English.
Highlighting disquieting narrative tableaux by a noted American artist whose singular oeuvre represents a fusion of photography, installation art, sculpture and performance, this catalogue illustrates more than 50 diverse works produced by Skoglund (b. 1946) from 1973 to 1997, including many of her well-known installations and installation-based photographs in which dreamlike, garishly monochromatic domestic environments are variously populated by live models, mannequins and sculpted animal figures. An interview with Skoglund augments three critical essays exploring the psychological, cultural and aesthetic issues addressed by the artist's photographs and installations and examining her recent photo-based lithographs.
