Examining in detail the oeuvre and influence of noted Italian painter Ricci (1676-1730), a key figure in the development of the Venetian school of landscape painting in the early 18th century, this catalogue presents excellent reproductions and substantial analyses of some 35 oils and 25 temperas by Ricci (among them pastoral scenes, harbor views and depictions of imaginary ruins) while also documenting more than 40 related works by such precursors, contemporaries and followers as Jan Both, Luca Carlevaris, Michele Marieschi, Francesco Guardi and Sebastiano Ricci, the artist's uncle. Supplemented by a catalogue raisonne of Ricci's 34 etchings, eleven scholarly essays include an overview of Venetian landscape painting of the period, critical discussions of Ricci's early artistic development and his links to 17th-century Dutch painters, an analysis of his impact on Canaletto, an account of his first sojourn in England (1708-11) and an examination of his work as a printmaker.
