Findings from the recent excavation of the Parisian atelier of renowned French ceramist, scientist and philosopher Palissy (ca. 1510-1590) are reviewed in this scholarly catalogue, which features seven essays discussing the archaeological project, the artist's multifaceted career and his legendary stature as reflected in the widespread imitation of his rustic style and naturalistic floral and fauna motifs by artists of the 19th century. The more than 140 diverse objects and archival materials documented include historical depictions of the artist, French faience platters of the late 1800s that are stylistically related to his work, and newly discovered artifacts which greatly augment knowledge of Palissy's oeuvre, including objects involved in his manufacturing processes, decorative plaques, ceramic tableware and architectural fragments.
