Extensively reviewing the career and oeuvre of one of the first women to achieve international recognition as an artist, this substantial catalogue presents excellent reproductions and detailed analyses of 35 portraits, self-portraits and religious compositions by Italian painter Anguissola (ca. 1535-1625) while also documenting some 30 works by her sisters Lucia, Anna Maria and Europa and by such leading artists of the period as Moroni and Cambiaso. Ten scholarly essays include discussions of the significance of Anguissola's role as a woman artist in Cinquecento Italy, her early career in Cremona and her tenure as a painter to the Madrid court of Phillip II, her critical fortunes, and the relationship of her work to the portraiture traditions of her time.
